Supporting Pencil Grasp Development by Griffin OT
Supporting Pencil Grasp Development is a programme designed by occupational therapist Kim Griffin to help to develop a child’s pencil grasp and pencil control. The programme is for children from three and a half to eight years of age. It is suitable for children that are learning to hold a pencil and for those that need extra help to develop a functional pencil grasp.
The programme is available in a book or online training format. It includes a warm-up song, activities to help develop the fine motor skills needed for a functional pencil grasp and over 400 worksheets. It can be used with an individual child, with a small group or as a whole class intervention.
The programme includes:
Background information on grasp development
Instructions on how to run the programme with individuals, groups or a whole class
Warm-up song with animation – Crocodile Snap
Clear descriptions for each activity, including pictures (an video demonstrations in the online version)
Specific targets for different age groups.
Downloadable evaluation and record keeping forms
Videos showing grasp development
The programme includes activities you can do to help develop and improve a child’s pencil grasp in as little as five minutes a day. It is the perfect for young children who are learning to hold their pencil. In addition, it is an excellent resource to use with children who have an awkward or immature pencil grasp.
