Star Dash Studios is first and foremost a game, however it does encourage players to think mathematically. This ‘maths by stealth’ approach in a gaming app for young adults is – we believe – unique. We think it could have great applications in the classroom to help keep kids engaged, or students could use it at home.
The game-play is fast and furious, the problems are highly visual and engaging, and the whole experience is served up with a large dollop of humour.
Gaming is a great way to engage kids to do maths, especially those who do not get on with school maths or feel anxious about it.
The game is primarily designed for 16-25 year olds, although it may be appropriate for other age groups too, and is completely free to download for anyone on any smartphone or tablet.
Star Dash Studios draws on academic work which shows a correlation between gaming and mathematical behaviour. It is the result of a collaboration between the National Numeracy’s maths education specialists and award-winning games developers Plug-In Media, in consultation with young job-seekers, apprentices and further education students. The voice-over is by comedian and writer, Chris Kendall.
