Partner with us and support your primary school (Year 6) and secondary school (Year 10 and 11) pupils to achieve in English and maths, through our low-cost tutoring programmes.

We have proven impact and deliver our programme at a very reasonable cost to ensure the benefits of tutoring can reach those who need it most – our core mission.

We work specifically with pupils who are eligible for Pupil Premium funding and at risk of not reaching national standards by the time they leave primary school or at risk of not achieving a grade 4 in their English or maths GCSEs.

We carefully select and train high-quality volunteer tutors who work closely with subject teachers, using our tailored curriculum resources, to ensure maximum impact.
We provide a member of our team to oversee the programme at each school, alleviating the burden on teachers to coordinate, and have capacity to work with up to 20 pupils a term, on a 1:2 basis.
We deliver regular impact reporting and evaluation of progress made by pupils on the programme.

We are currently working with over 80 schools across the country and an external evaluation has shown that our tutoring support can add up to half a grade to a pupil’s progress. We are operating in Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, Sheffield and Sussex, with plans to move to Nottingham in autumn 2019.

Sadly, the academic attainment gap is still a stark reality across the country but we are passionate that with targeted interventions like ours we can make an impact on reducing it, and ensuring that no pupil’s life chances are limited by their background or circumstances.

Key headlines from our work last year demonstrate this impact:

In 2017-18 disadvantaged secondary school pupils, supported by Action Tutoring, were able to match the national pass rate, after the equivalent of two terms of weekly tutoring, at GCSE level despite the extra hurdles they faced. This is despite the pass-rate for disadvantaged pupils tending to fall 15-20% behind the overall national figures, in English Language and maths GCSEs respectively.

Equally 72% of primary pupils supported by Action Tutoring achieved national standards in their SATs, where just 10% were working at this level at the start of their programme.

In 2017-18 Action Tutoring supported nearly 2,500 pupils with its intervention, enabled by 1,100 inspiring volunteer tutors and working in partnership with 80 schools across the country.

Action Tutoring has worked with partner schools and volunteers since 2011. It has supported thousands of pupils across the country to succeed, despite the barriers they face in life. We are committed to making a measurable impact and continually seek to learn and improve the work we do.

Research carried out by the Education Endowment Foundation showed that pupils make up to five months
additional progress, during an intensive tutoring programme.

In 2014, an independent evaluator, NIESR, analysed the impact of Action Tutoring on the young people supported. It found a positive association between the number of Action Tutoring sessions attended and the estimated impact; suggesting that pupils who attended at least seven sessions could make half a grade extra progress compared to their peers. This research was verified as achieving level 3 on Nesta’s Standards of Evidence.
